Harvey Impresses on Historic Silverstone Debut

This weekend, Harvey made his debut in the Club100 Junior Northern Championship at the legendary Silverstone Circuit — and it turned out to be a truly historic occasion.

The event was held on the brand new Silverstone International FIA-graded kart circuit, making it the first ever race meeting to be held on the track. With the circuit completely new to everyone, all drivers were learning it from scratch — a challenge even for experienced racers.

For Harvey, however, the step into the unknown was even bigger.

This was his first-ever outdoor race weekend, his first competitive race start, and his first time racing a Club100 kart — machinery that is significantly faster and more physically demanding than anything he had driven before.

To make matters even tougher, the weather at Silverstone was constantly changing throughout the day. Heavy rain early in the morning left the circuit soaked and extremely slippery, while later sessions saw the conditions gradually evolve. Drivers had to constantly adapt to changing grip levels, damp patches, and evolving racing lines — something that can catch out even very experienced racers.

Despite these difficult conditions, Harvey immediately showed encouraging pace during the morning practice session, finishing 8th in extremely wet conditions. For someone experiencing their first-ever outdoor karting session, it was a very impressive start.

Qualifying marked another big milestone — Harvey’s first-ever outdoor qualifying session. He recorded a 1:30.812 lap, initially placing 13th for the Pre-B Final. However, once the Club100 Karting Championship officials reviewed the results, they adjusted the grid positions to balance the two qualifying groups, as the B group had run in much wetter conditions than the A group.

After these adjustments were made, Harvey was promoted to an impressive 4th place on the grid for the Pre-B Final.

The Pre-B Final would mark Harvey’s first-ever race start, and he handled the moment superbly. Launching cleanly from the grid, he made an excellent getaway and immediately gained a position, moving into 3rd place by the first corner.

What followed was one of the most impressive drives of the day.

Despite racing against drivers with far more experience in both outdoor karting and Club100 machinery, Harvey showed race craft well beyond his experience level. Throughout the race, he remained locked in a fierce battle with the leading group, confidently defending positions, making smart overtakes, and repeatedly swapping places with the front-runners.

While the eventual winner managed to pull away slightly, the front pack remained tightly grouped, and even by the end of the race, the fight remained close all the way back to 7th place. Harvey stayed firmly in this leading battle for much of the race, handling the intense pressure of pack racing extremely well for a driver making his first-ever outdoor race start.

In the closing laps, the pace of the front group eventually began to stretch the field slightly, and Harvey crossed the line in 7th place. However, the finishing position alone does not reflect how competitive the race was, with Harvey remaining very much part of the front battle throughout the race.

It was an excellent performance and a remarkable achievement for his first outdoor race.

The B Final, later in the day, presented another big opportunity. Starting 5th on the grid, Harvey was in a strong position and had a genuine chance of fighting for a place in the A Final — something that would have been an incredible result on his debut.

Unfortunately, the start of the race brought immediate drama. As the pack charged into the first corner, the kart directly ahead of Harvey spun in front of him, leaving him with nowhere to go. With the rest of the field closing in behind, Harvey was forced to take avoiding action, which dropped him back to almost last place in a field of 25 karts.

At that moment, many drivers might have let frustration take over.

Harvey did the opposite.

Showing impressive maturity and determination under pressure, he kept his focus and began an excellent recovery drive through the field. Lap after lap, he worked his way past other drivers, carefully choosing his overtaking opportunities and demonstrating strong race awareness.

By the chequered flag, he had fought his way back to 11th place, an impressive recovery considering where he had been after the chaos at the first corner.

While the results sheet may show 11th place, it doesn’t fully capture what was achieved during the day.

On his first-ever outdoor race weekend, at a brand new FIA-graded international circuit, in constantly changing weather conditions and against a large, competitive grid, Harvey showed pace, composure, and race craft well beyond his experience level.

More importantly, he proved he can handle the pressure of racing wheel-to-wheel in large packs, something that even experienced drivers find challenging.

With more experience — and perhaps a little more racing luck — an A Final appearance looks well within reach very soon.

An incredible debut, at a historic event for the circuit, and a hugely promising start to Harvey’s Club100 journey.
